AI-GUIDE: A Revolutionary Medical Device Wins 2026 Excellence in Technology Transfer Award

Great news out of the technology world today – AI-GUIDE, an innovative medical device developed by MIT Lincoln Laboratory and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), has taken home the 2026 Excellence in Technology Transfer Award. This accolade, presented by the Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC), is a high recognition of the remarkable contributions and collaborations federal laboratories make in the field of technology transfer.

From Vision to Reality

Collaboration and significant funding from the U.S. Army’s Combat Casuality Care Research Program (CCC) led to the creation of AI-GUIDE, transforming it from an idea into a reality. Lincoln Laboratory’s chief technology transfer officer, Asha Rajagopal, highlights the importance of this technology transfer— it’s created a solution that marries the operational need of the Army with the clinical expertise of Mass General and the engineering prowess of Lincoln Laboratory. All of this has paved the way for the technology to be transferred to the startup, AutonomUS Medical Technologies, Inc.

A Revolution in Medical Care

AI-GUIDE is turning heads with its potential to dramatically improve health outcomes for both servicemen and civilians. This isn’t your usual ultrasound device – it’s compact, portable and designed to be used outside of a typical hospital setting. What sets it apart is AI software combined with handheld ultrasound technology, which guides its users in crucial medical procedures on the spot. This is a real game changer for U.S. military medics in the field who often have to maintain injured soldiers before they can be transported to a hospital.

Further strides in the development and transfer of technology were evidenced in AI-GUIDE’s journey, which went from a CCC-led concept to a fully functional, proof-of-concept technology all within three years. Clinical examinations at MGH bore out its effectiveness, leading to the creation of AutonomUS Medical Technologies by the Lincoln Laboratory and MGH staff to facilitate commercialization.

Support from various organizations and agencies, including the MIT Technology Licensing Office, Lincoln Laboratory Technology Transfer Office, and CCC, has helped the company bag FDA’s Breakthrough Device Designation. This is a fast-track regulatory pathway granted only to highly innovative technologies with the potential to save lives. All this in addition to a Small Business Innovation Research grant from the U.S. Department of the Air Force and funds from private investors, the Department of War, and the National Institutes of Health.

Looking Ahead

Innovations are not ceasing, and AI-GUIDE continues to add more capabilities, including peripheral nerve block technology for trauma care and pain management. The team has previously been recognized with the Lincoln Laboratory Best Invention Award and an R&D 100 Award.
