Celebrating Daniela Rus: A Pioneer in Robotics and AI

Daniela Rus Receives Renowned Bavarian High-Tech Prize

Distinguished MIT director, Daniela Rus, has been honored with a prestigious accolade – the 2026 High-Tech Prize. The renowned researcher commands respect in the halls of the esteemed Massachusetts Institute of Technology as the head of its Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and the Panasonic Professor of Computer Science. Awarded by the Bavarian Minister-President, the prestigious honor singles out Rus for her innovative contributions to the intricate world of robotics, artificial intelligence and autonomous systems.

This acclaim doesn’t come lightly. Jointly presented by the Bavarian State Government and the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, it is considered Germany’s loftiest reward for reigning champions in the fields of technology and engineering. The laurel was bequeathed to Rus on July 23 at the majestic Herkulessaal of the Munich Residence.

Innovative Leadership in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence

Rus’s groundbreaking research spans decades, earning commendations for significant breakthroughs in four key domains: self-organizing robot collectives, brain-inspired artificial intelligence, soft robotics and autonomous mobility. With a commitment of over 30 years, Rus has been at the forefront of machines operating beyond mere lab confines and excelling in real-world conditions.

As the era ushers in wider recognition of physical AI from industry leaders and policymakers, Rus’s research leads the charge. Her focus on human-robot collaboration transcends the home or factory, but paints a broader vista. Rus is crafting algorithms and systems that will augment the implementation of autonomous robots in sectors as diverse as agriculture, medicine, transportation, environmental monitoring, to even everyday domains like home.

Rus has also carried the beacon forward in soft robotics, crafting flexible machines capable of adapting and engaging with their environment more intuitively and safely than traditional robotic systems. The queen of soft robotics, Rus’s prime focus has been developing robots with real-time reasoning and adaptability, all thanks to explainable algorithms.

Leading Revolutionary Solutions at MIT’s CSAIL

Under Rus’s leadership, MIT’s Distributed Robotics Laboratory has been instrumental in developing path-breaking solutions to some of our most daunting challenges. Notable amongst them are an ingestible origami robot, designed to retrieve ingested button batteries from children’s digestive tracts, and a fleet of small autonomous boats capable of forming bridges and platforms, effectively turning waterways into infrastructural assets.

Another feather added to her illustrious cap has been her role in birthing the concept of liquid neural networks. Drawing inspiration from the compact neural system of a tiny worm, these networks enhance efficiency by navigating a vehicle through unknown territories with just 19 control neurons. This research subsequently culminated in the founding of Liquid AI, a company devoted to creating models tailored to the hardware restrictions of the devices they function on.

Her triumphant feats have earned her the adulation of her peers too. Her fellow academician, Lorenzo Masia, a professor of intelligent bio-robotic systems at the Technical University of Munich, acknowledges Rus as a pioneer in soft robotics and physical AI, and firmly believes that she will undoubtedly bring this field into the spotlight.

Rus’s illustrious list of awards includes the 2025 IEEE Edison Medal and the 2024 John Scott Award. Her numerous achievements have also garnered her notable fellowships, making her a fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and Association for Computing Machinery. In addition to these, she holds memberships in the French National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Engineering.
