Altman conceded that privacy, independence, and the safety of teenagers frequently collide. He wrote, “We are trying to navigate this carefully,” highlighting how complex it is to protect our young while keeping AI tools like ChatGPT open. OpenAI is in the process of building a system that predicts a user’s age based on their interaction with ChatGPT. Altman notes that if there is any doubt about a user’s age, the system will choose to exercise caution—a part of the broader plan to differentiate user experiences for adults and teens and provide added security for the latter.

This problem has become more pressing due to recent saddening events involving teenagers who allegedly died by suicide after interacting with AI chatbots. Grieving parents narrated their heart-wrenching stories at the Senate hearing, appealing for stringent surveillance and responsibility from tech companies developing AI chat conversation products.

In his blog, Altman shows his readiness to shoulder responsibility and make alterations as needed. “We’re committed to doing more to protect teens,” he affirmed, revealing that OpenAI is focusing its efforts on creating features that stop the chatbot from discussing matters related to suicide with underage users.
