The fruits of his research is MechStyle, an innovative AI system that allows users to personalize 3D models. In practical terms, MechStyle is easy to use. Users can upload their own 3D model or select from preset items like vases or glasses, then guide the AI to stylize the object using either a text prompt or an image. The ingenuity of MechStyle lies in its incorporation of finite element analysis (FEA), which ensures that changes made to shape of the model do not compromise its structural integrity.
The Perfect Union of Aesthetics and Functionality
Previously, only 26% of AI-stylized 3D models were actually suitable for real-world use. MechStyle effectively solves this problem by combining generative AI with adaptive simulation scheduling. In doing so, it can identify and strengthen weak points in a model, dynamically adjusting the design process. Tests proved promising, with MechStyle maintaining up to 100% structural viability across 30 different models.
MechStyle caters to both rapid, creative exploration and stringent structural analysis via two distinct modes. This versatility enables users to ideate freely before settling on a design that’s been thoroughly checked for strength and viability.

There’s something extraordinary about being able to create a unique, personalized object without sacrificing its functionality. But like any other technology, MechStyle is not without its limitations, at least at the present moment. For instance, it can’t fix structurally flawed models. But there is ongoing work to enhance the system and overcome such limitations.
“3D is a much more difficult task, as training data is scarce and changing the object’s geometry can harm its structure. MechStyle helps solve this problem, allowing for 3D stylization without breaking the object’s structural integrity via simulation,” says Fabian Manhardt, a research scientist at Google. Certainly, as generative AI continues to advance, tools like MechStyle will play an increasing role in closing the gap between digital creativity and the real world.
