Trailblazing computer scientist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist David Siegel is stepping into an exciting new role. An MIT graduate with a Master\u2019s degree (’86) and PhD (’91), Siegel is set to take on the title of MIT Innovation Fellow for the 2026-27 academic year. This is no small task: Siegel will be working alongside the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) in sparking scientific breakthroughs at MIT and beyond.<\/p>\n
Siegel’s life-long connection to MIT started during his time as a graduate student, during which he contributed to the creation of a ground-breaking robotic hand at the MIT AI Lab. Today, he remains actively involved with MIT, still serving as a life member of the MIT Corporation and offering his expertise in an array of advisory roles.<\/p>\n
After earning his doctorate, Siegel dove into entrepreneurship head-first. He helped establish a series of early internet companies before co-founding Two Sigma in 2001, a leading global investment firm. He continuously uses his personal success to better the community, with his philanthropic labors funneled through the Siegel Family Endowment, a channel of support for organizations tackling the societal impacts of technological evolution.<\/p>\n
Remaining at the forefront of AI, Siegel is heavily involved in the AI ecosystem globally. His involvement comprises the investment in startups, board member positions, and the creation of a non-profit named Open Athena in 2024, dedicated to supplying talent and resources to academic research labs in the realm of AI. He is also dipping his toes into the literary world, co-authoring an upcoming book titled “When Machines Act: The Promise and Peril of Navigating Our Agentic AI Future”. This work, a collaboration with Yale University colleagues, is due for publication next year by MIT Press.<\/p>\n
