Empowering Young Entrepreneurs: The Journey from MIT to Middle Schools

Bill Aulet, author of “Disciplined Entrepreneurship” and director of the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship, has created an impressive reputation with his 24-step guide to starting a venture. This guide has proven to be a remarkably effective tool among MIT students taking part in the delta v startup accelerator program, resulting in a 61 percent survival/acquisition rate and more than $3 billion in collective funding.

Even though the framework is widely taught at colleges across the globe, it has not been particularly accessible for younger students interested in entrepreneurship. Recognizing this gap, a remedy was birthed in the form of an AI-powered youth entrepreneurship platform known as Dear Dreamer, enabled by the generous Frank and Eileen Foundation.

Designed for middle and high school students, Dear Dreamer refashions the disciplined entrepreneurship framework into a digital, self-paced learning journey. Packed with short educational videos, interactive exercises, and personalized feedback, the platform seeks to motivate 50,000 up-and-coming entrepreneurs by 2030.

From vision to reality

In a conversation with MIT News, Aulet shared more about the project’s purpose and its development. Tracing the project’s roots, Aulet informed that their success with the disciplined entrepreneurship framework at MIT encouraged them to make it a course on the online learning platform edX, attracting hundreds of thousands of students. Following this success, they began to envision how to foster more entrepreneurs, not just inside MIT, but beyond its walls.

This vision pricked the interest of Audrey McLoghlin, the founder and CEO of apparel brand Frank and Eileen. On seeing “Jetpack,” an AI tool trained on disciplined entrepreneurship, Audrey saw a pathway to making entrepreneurship accessible to young people. Thus Dear Dreamer was born.

How it works

{{.}}Dear Dreamer takes the proven disciplined entrepreneurship curriculum and packages it in an engaging and interactive format suitable for youngsters. Adapting the course material to cater to the 10 to 14-year-old demographic, the user interface has been designed to resemble popular apps like Instagram or YouTube, featuring video content and relatable presenters.

The entrepreneurial edge

Entrepreneurship is a mindset and skill set that enables one to handle change, a trait becoming increasingly important in fast-paced modern societies. Although the entrepreneurship journey is not for everyone, it fosters the mentality of innovation and creation, moving beyond seeking jobs to creating employment. The entrepreneurial mindset carries significant benefits even within larger companies, as it promotes a dynamic response to change and ambiguity.
