This fall, the MIT School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P) has opened its doors, welcoming four incredible new faces to its faculty. Their unique expertise—in fields as diverse as media arts, artificial intelligence, sustainable architecture, and building technology—brings fresh approaches and insights, reinforcing MIT’s reputation for innovation and academic leadership.
Returning to her alma mater, Karrie G. Karahalios steps in as a full Professor in the Media Lab. With a string of degrees to her credit, Karahalios clocks major respect for her leading-edge research on the social consequences and implications of algorithmically mediated communication. She paints a vivid picture of how digital platforms tweak our reactions, behaviors, and perceptions, uniquely bridging computing, AI, anthropology, psychology, and design in her investigation.
Rising star Pat Pataranutaporn now takes on the role of Assistant Professor of Media Arts and Sciences. Ever involved in forging new paths in human-AI interaction, Pataranutaporn spearheads exciting research into how customized AI could amp up human cognition and emotional well-being. Pataranutaporn aspires to reshape the way AI infuses our everyday existence, steering it towards a direction that assures personal empowerment.
Also shaking hands with opportunity is Mariana Popescu, as Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture. Infused with skills in computational architecture and structural design, Popescu’s work orbits around digital fabrication and sustainability. Recognised by the MIT Technology Review as an industry pioneer, Popescu’s innovative methodology integrates architecture, engineering, and computational design to spawn environmentally friendly construction solutions.
Making her presence felt as an Associate Professor in the Building Technology Program is Holly Samuelson. Her research revolves around the applications of advanced simulation tools to study the effects of buildings on several environmental aspects from greenhouse gas emissions to indoor air quality. Samuelson’s insights herald deep, meaningful conversations on sustainable architecture in a world rapidly shifting underfoot.
Dean of SA+P, Hashim Sarkis, spoke highly of the new appointments, expressing excitement at the academic vitality they bring. With varied backgrounds and a shared commitment to groundbreaking research, this diverse group of fresh faculty promises to significantly enrich the MIT community.
