This popular program, birthed by MIT Libraries, is refining its approach by turning its attention towards fiction and memoirs. The underlying reason for this shift lies in the remarkable power of storytelling to tighten the threads of our shared humanity and deepen our collective understanding of ourselves and our global community.\n<\/p>\n
\nWith MIT Libraries Director, Chris Bourg, at the helm, the program emphasizes the significant role of fiction in enabling us to picture and create our future. As he succinctly puts it, “Reading fiction prompts us to think about how what we build might change us.” Our fast-paced lives hardly ever provide moments of solitude for introspection or building connections. Reading together, in this context, offers a precious window for individual reflection and shared bonding.\n<\/p>\n
\nAs MIT continues to explore the implications of AI on education and the broader campus community, the value of communal reading, reflection, and thoughtful discourse has never been more conspicuous. The recent report<\/a> from MIT\u2019s Ad Hoc Committee on AI Use in Teaching, Learning, and Research Training underscores the burning need to fortify social bonds and personal well-being. One cannot overlook the instrumental role played by MIT Reads in stirring impactful discussions within the campus community.\n<\/p>\n \nSince its inception in 2016, MIT Reads has devoted itself to engendering empathy, understanding, and a sense of belonging within the campus. Each selected book comes along with a host of programs, such as author talks, panel discussions, and group conversations steered by the library staff. The program’s influence radiates beyond the boundaries of MIT, welcoming a broader audience to author events available online or open to the public.\n<\/p>\n \nTo inaugurate this new phase, President Sally Kornbluth has selected “Exhalation” by Ted Chiang as the book for Fall 2026. This collection of short stories delves into scientific fantasies involving robots, time travel, and alternate realities. Simultaneously, it addresses topical issues involving identity, free will, language, and technology. Kornbluth observes, “Chiang provides a prescient glimpse of several issues we are currently wrestling with, specifically regarding technology\u2019s role, particularly the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence.”\n<\/p>\n \nResting his faith in the global community of readers, Chris Bourg invites everyone to join the dialogue.
