Slack Unveils Powerful AI Features to Boost Productivity and Compete with Microsoft

Slack’s Big AI Upgrade: What It Means for Your Workday

Slack just got a lot smarter—think less “chat app,” more “office assistant that actually knows what’s going on.” If you use Slack at your job, you’ll soon notice some major improvements, all powered by AI—but this isn’t just about flash. The changes are designed to help you get more done with less hassle, from tracking down information buried in threads to deciphering that never-ending flow of jargon and acronyms.

Let’s start with the smarter search. Instead of blindly fumbling through channels, you can now ask Slack questions in plain language—like, “What’s the latest on the product launch?”—and instantly get answers from across your messages, files, and integrated apps. Even documents stored in Google Drive, Microsoft Teams, Salesforce, and more are in reach, all from one unified search bar. No more clicking through six apps just to find that one doc someone shared ages ago.

But that’s just the beginning. Ever joined a new team and felt lost in translation thanks to a flood of internal lingo? Slack’s new AI message explanation tool is like a built-in translator for workplace jargon. Hover over anything you don’t understand, and Slack will instantly tell you what that acronym, project name, or inside joke means—straight from your company’s own conversation history. For new hires or people working across teams, this makes onboarding or switching projects way less intimidating.

Slack’s AI is also rolling out writing help and meeting recaps. Can’t keep up with a monster thread? The new tools will summarize long conversations or huddles and highlight key points and action items. They can even generate FAQs, help you clarify the tone of a message, and support you as you draft replies. Bring someone up to speed or clarify a chaotic discussion in seconds.

So why all this now? It’s part of a bigger push by Salesforce (Slack’s parent company) to claim the workplace tech crown, especially as Microsoft is doubling down on AI in its Office suite and Teams. Notably, Salesforce is making a hard promise: Your workplace data won’t be used to train outside AI models. Security and trust are big themes here. The new AI features inherit all of Slack’s existing security measures, including encryption and compliance standards.

For you as a Slack user, what does all this mean? In short: work just got easier to manage. Whether your day is a blur of remote meetings, document searches, or catching up after some time off, these new AI-driven updates are here to clear a path through the clutter. The goal: spend less time hunting for answers and more time actually getting things done. If Slack pulls this off, “working in Slack” could soon mean much less busywork and much more actual progress.
