Gemini adds direct editing for Google Docs and files
Google Gemini can now generate, preview, and edit PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files, and code directly inside the chat interface, according to The Verge. The new file editing tools are available starting today for all Gemini users, with PDF preview and editing on both web and mobile, while the other file types are web-only for now.
The update matters because it moves Gemini from file generation into actual file handling. Instead of creating a document and sending it elsewhere to polish it, users can stay in the app, open files in full-screen mode, highlight text, and ask Gemini questions or prompt edits from there.
Google had already added support for generating and downloading files in Gemini earlier this year. This release extends that workflow by letting users modify those files without leaving the app, at least for the formats Google has enabled so far.
- Available now: file generation, preview, and editing inside Gemini.
- Mobile support: PDFs only, for now.
- Web support: all listed file formats, including Google Docs and Sheets.
For businesses, the practical appeal is obvious: fewer app switches, faster document cleanup, and a more direct path from draft to usable file. Teams already testing AI assistants for everyday work may see this as another sign that chat tools are becoming lightweight document editors, not just text generators.

What kinds of work would you trust Gemini to edit directly inside a file, and where would you still want a separate review step?
