MIT’s Influence on AI Future: AI2050 Fellows

With artificial intelligence technology (AI) continuously evolving at a rapid pace, step forward the accomplished representatives of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MIT’s presence has been strongly felt in the 2025 cohort of AI2050 Fellows, a laudable initiative by Schmidt Sciences. The initiative honour acknowledges individuals who are making significant strides in expediting AI’s evolution and application across society’s most pertinent obstacles. Our story features nine bright minds, including two currently engaged with MIT and seven esteemed alumni.

In the Limelight: Zongyi Li and Tess Smidt

To begin with, the distinguished pair currently representing MIT in the cohort are Zongyi Li and Tess Smidt. Li is contributing as a postdoctoral researcher at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), and Smidt is currently serving as an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Their selection as Early Career Fellows reflects the impact their research could have on AI’s future trajectory.

What makes Li’s work unique? He’s well known for focusing on neural operator methods aimed at hastening scientific computing via machine learning. He collaborates with EECS associate professor Kaiming He at CSAIL and has earned his PhD from Caltech. As for Smidt, she champions a blend of physics, geometry, and machine learning to create algorithms that respect the symmetries of 3D physical systems. A vital concept for new materials and molecules. Smidt’s remarkable work has already earned her recognition, like the AFOSR Young Investigator Award and the EECS Outstanding Educator Award, amongst others.

MIT’s Alumni Impact

Moving on to our alumni, who are also paving their path to shaping the world of AI. Early Career Fellows accolades have been awarded to Brian Hie, Natasha Mary Jaques, Martin Anton Schrimpf, Lindsey Raymond, and Ellen Dee Zhong. On the other hand, Surya Ganguli and Luke Zettlemoyer are changing the game as Senior Fellows. All of these individuals have unique abilities and have shown immense potential to advance the future of AI.
